Germany records 5,120 heatwave deaths through June

4,310 of those deaths occurred in just June 22-28, as temperatures topped 40 degrees Celsius in many areas.

The Robert Koch Institute estimated that 5,120 people died in Germany from extreme heat since the start of summer through June 28, 2026. The figure was well above the annual average of 2,900 heat-related deaths in 2023-2025. The biggest spike came on June 22-28, when the RKI counted 4,310 additional deaths amid temperatures that climbed above 40 degrees Celsius in several areas. For the period from April through June 21, the RKI estimated 810 deaths, and nearly all of them occurred on June 15-21. The most affected group was the elderly: about 2,950 deaths were among people aged 85 and older. According to the German Weather Service, June 2026 was the country’s second-warmest June on record, behind 2019.
