Germany hunts suspect after Berlin Pride crowd ramming, 1 dead
Investigators linked the 21-year-old suspect to Islamist sympathizers and urged 16 states to review security for major events.
German authorities are hunting a suspect after a white van plowed into a crowd at the Christopher Street Day or Berlin Pride celebration in Berlin's Tiergarten district on Saturday night. One woman was killed, while the number of injured was reported at between 17 and 25, with several victims in critical condition. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said the investigation points to a suspect with a criminal record, signs of radicalization and ties to Islamist circles. German media identified the fugitive as Abdul Ballut, 21, a German citizen of Lebanese descent. After the vehicle struck a tree near the Brandenburg Gate, the suspect was said to have gotten out and fled on foot. The federal government also asked 16 states to review security measures for upcoming major events.
