German probe found 3rd drone, explosives after Leipzig airport attack

What's new: Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Berlin will soon identify who it believes was behind the attempted strike.

German investigators found a third drone and suspected military explosives after an attempted attack earlier this month on Leipzig/Halle Airport, a major cargo and military logistics hub in eastern Germany. Local media reported the drone was discovered Aug. 14 west of the airport, along with about 50 grams of a substance investigators suspect was hexogen. The inquiry began after an explosives-laden drone was found Aug. 4 near a Ukrainian Antonov cargo plane used for military supplies. Investigators also suspect a second drone struck a DHL cargo aircraft shortly after the airport briefly shut down. Security sources cited by local media suspect Russian intelligence involvement, though Berlin has not formally blamed Moscow and Russia has denied any role.
