Georgia coaster death spurs shutdown of 11 similar rides
What's new: parks in Florida, California and Montreal halted related coasters as investigators review restraints like the one on Goliath.
A fatal fall from the Goliath roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia has led parks in the U.S. and Canada to shut down 11 similar rides while investigators examine what went wrong. Cobb County police said Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem, a 42-year-old Atlanta school employee, was ejected from the coaster Monday shortly before 4 p.m. Witnesses told media they saw him come out of his seat, strike other riders and fall beneath the attraction. Georgia's insurance and fire safety commissioner's office is reviewing the incident. PBS, citing AP reporting, said nine of the closed coasters share the same manufacturer, Bolliger & Mabillard, and a similar clamshell-style restraint system as Goliath.
