M6.4 quake hits Simalungun, felt in Malaysia, no tsunami
BNPB has not reported fatalities, while BMKG said the shallow quake was triggered by plate subduction activity.
A magnitude 6.4 earthquake shook Simalungun Regency, North Sumatra, on Saturday (15/8) at 17:54 WIB, and the tremors were felt as far as the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. BMKG said the epicenter was on land at a depth of 163 kilometers, about 11 kilometers southeast of Simalungun, and posed no tsunami threat. North Sumatra BPBD reported strong shaking for about 30 seconds in Simalungun, Medan and Pakpak Bharat, while Tapanuli Tengah felt it for around 10 seconds. BMKG classified the quake as a mid-depth event caused by plate subduction activity with a down-dip strike-slip mechanism. As of Saturday night, BNPB had not reported any fatalities and was still assessing the impact with BPBD, Basarnas, TNI and Polri in affected areas.
