M6.1 quake shakes sea southeast of Nias Selatan, no tsunami

A tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 shook the sea 157 kilometers southeast of Nias Selatan, Sumatera Utara, on Tuesday (18/8) at 13.02 WIB. BMKG said the quake had no tsunami potential. In a parameter update, BMKG recorded a magnitude of 5.8 with a depth of 35 kilometers at coordinates 0.67 LS and 98.29 BT. BMKG said the quake was triggered by subduction activity, classified as a shallow quake, with a thrust-fault mechanism. The strongest shaking was felt in Tapanuli Utara at level IV MMI, then at level III in Nias Selatan, Padang, Padang Pariaman, Pariaman, Pasaman Barat, Kabupaten Agam, Padang Panjang, Bukittinggi, and Pesisir Selatan. BNPB said the tremor in Nias Selatan lasted about 3-5 seconds. By 13.30 WIB, no aftershocks had been detected.
