M5.3 quake in Pangandaran felt in Bandung and Sukabumi

BMKG later revised the magnitude to 5.2, recorded one M2.2 aftershock and said the quake posed no tsunami threat.

An earthquake in the sea southwest of Pangandaran, West Java, shook southern parts of the province on Wednesday night and was felt as far as Bandung Regency and Sukabumi. BMKG recorded the quake at 21.55 WIB, initially at magnitude 5.3. In an update, BMKG said the magnitude was 5.2, with a depth of 14 kilometers and an epicenter at coordinates 8,17 LS and 107,86 BT, about 87 kilometers southwest of Pangandaran. BMKG said the shallow quake was triggered by activity on an active fault and posed no tsunami threat. Shaking was reported at intensity III MMI in several districts in Bandung Regency, II-III MMI in Soreang, Pangalengan, Ciwidey, and in Sukabumi Regency and Sukabumi City, and II MMI in Sumedang, Parongpong, Cihanjuang, Ngamprah, Lembang, and Pelabuhan Ratu. By 22.30 WIB, BMKG had detected one aftershock measuring magnitude 2.2.
