M3.5 quake rattles Bantul, shaking felt as far as Solo

BMKG linked the shallow quake to Sesar Opak and reported no damage or aftershocks through 17.39 WIB.

A magnitude 3.5 earthquake shook Bantul, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta, on Thursday (20/8) at 17.20 WIB, with tremors felt as far as Solo. BMKG placed the epicenter on land 11 kilometers northeast of Bantul at a depth of 21 kilometers, at coordinates 7.88 LS and 110.45 BT. Ardhianto Septiadhi, head of the Sleman Geophysics Station, said the quake was shallow and was triggered by activity along the Sesar Opak. Shaking reached III MMI in Bantul and Kota Yogyakarta, while Kulon Progo, Sleman, Klaten, Solo, and Magelang felt II MMI. By 17.39 WIB, BMKG had not detected any aftershocks and had not received reports of damage. The next day, BMKG also explained that the booming sound reported by residents commonly accompanies shallow quakes.
