France moves to sue Paraguay senator over racist abuse of Mbappe

What's next: The French football federation plans a criminal complaint after Celeste Amarilla's posts followed France's 1-0 World Cup win.

France forward Kylian Mbappe and the French Football Federation escalated a row over racist abuse after Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla posted slurs about his origins and education following France's 1-0 World Cup last-16 win over Paraguay in Philadelphia. Mbappe called Amarilla “a despicable woman” and said she did not represent Paraguay or its players, whose tournament run he praised. The FFF said it would refer the case to prosecutors and pursue legal action, calling the remarks criminal and unacceptable. Paraguay's government also rejected Amarilla's statements. Mbappe's penalty sent France into a quarterfinal against Morocco in Boston.
