France arrests about 2,400 after protests erupt into nationwide riots

Why it matters: More than 550,000 marched over living costs and public services, while over 500 emergency workers were injured.

France detained about 2,400 people after demonstrations over fuel prices, the cost of living and strained public services spiraled into rioting, looting and arson across Paris, Marseille, Lille, Lyon and other cities. President Emmanuel Macron urged "calm and order" in a national address, while authorities moved to protect shops and civic buildings. The interior ministry put turnout at about 550,000 nationwide. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said more than 500 police officers, gendarmes and firefighters were injured, and one protester died in Paris after suffering cardiac arrest. In Limoges, rioters set city hall ablaze, gutting the 19th-century building.
