Forest and land fires in Kalimantan damage orangutan habitat in Ketapang
YIARI calls the situation critical as the fires cut orangutans off from food and water, threatening their survival.
Forest and land fires in Kalimantan have damaged wildlife habitat, including for orangutans in Ketapang, West Kalimantan. BBC reported that a weak orangutan was found lying on the ground in the area, while Yayasan Inisiasi Alam Rehabilitasi Indonesia (YIARI) said the fires have destroyed part of the habitat of hundreds of orangutans and endangered the species' survival. According to YIARI CEO Karmele Llano Sanchez, conditions are “quite critical” because the fires have left orangutans without food and water. The orangutan found in Ketapang will be moved to a rehabilitation center for further treatment before being released back into the wild. Indonesia is also stepping up efforts to contain haze from fires in six provinces in Kalimantan and Sumatra.
