Fleetwood oust Arsenal on penalties 5-3 in League Cup
Fleetwood advance to the quarterfinals in mid-December after a 1-1 draw, with Arsenal reduced to 10 men after Max Dowman’s red card.
Fleetwood Town pulled off a major upset by eliminating Arsenal in the fourth round of the League Cup after a 5-3 penalty shootout win at Highbury Stadium in Fleetwood on Tuesday local time (27/10). The match ended 1-1 in normal time. The hosts went ahead through Aaron Loupalo-Bi in the 21st minute before Viktor Gyokeres leveled early in the second half. Arsenal’s task became harder when 16-year-old winger Max Dowman was shown a straight red card in the 85th minute. In the shootout, all five Fleetwood takers — Ronan Coughlan, Harrison Neal, Will Davies, Andy Cannon, and Conor Haughey — scored. For Arsenal, Martin Odegaard, Kai Havertz, and Gyokeres converted, but Bruno Guimaraes had his effort saved.
