First Russian diesel tanker in 3 years heads to New York

Why it matters: The 40,000-ton cargo marks a sharp U.S. sanctions reversal as Ukraine presses allies to cut Moscow's energy revenue.

A tanker carrying 40,000 metric tons of Russian ultra-low sulphur diesel is heading to New York, the first such shipment to the United States since 2023 after President Donald Trump struck an import deal with President Vladimir Putin. Shipping data cited by Kpler and LSEG showed the Malta-flagged Agioi Fanendes loaded cargo at Primorsk on Oct. 22 and is expected to arrive Nov. 7. The shipment equals about 300,000 barrels, a small share of the roughly 4 million barrels of diesel the U.S. uses each day. The agreement has drawn protests from Ukraine, which argues purchases of Russian fuel help fund Moscow's war.
