FBI probes suspicious letters sent to Senate and election offices
What's new: powder-filled mailings disrupted offices in Louisiana and Oklahoma, with Election Day three weeks away.
Federal authorities are investigating a wave of letters containing suspicious substances mailed to Senate offices and election agencies across the country. The FBI, U.S. Postal Inspection Service and U.S. Capitol Police told Senate staff that more letters could still arrive as investigators try to intercept them. At least two state election offices, in Louisiana and Oklahoma, were evacuated after powder-filled packages arrived, while Ohio officials said the Postal Service stopped a similar mailing before delivery. The incidents come about three weeks before Election Day and echo 2023 mail threats that disrupted election offices in six states and, in some cases, contained traces of fentanyl.
