FAA moves to fire 2 LaGuardia controllers after fatal March crash

What's new: investigators are examining whether the pair left about an hour early before the collision that killed two pilots.

The Federal Aviation Administration is moving to fire two air traffic controllers at New York’s LaGuardia Airport after a March 22 collision between an Air Canada Express jet and a Port Authority fire truck killed both pilots. Officials familiar with the inquiry believe the controllers were supposed to be on duty but left the facility early. The National Transportation Safety Board previously found there were two controllers in the tower that night, with one handling two jobs while the other dealt with a separate emergency. The crash injured dozens more and intensified scrutiny of chronic staffing shortages and shift practices in US air traffic control. The controllers’ union said it is discussing the allegations with FAA leadership.
