Explosive drone shut runway at German DHL hub in Leipzig

German authorities opened a counterterrorism investigation after workers found an explosive-laden drone in a restricted cargo area at Leipzig/Halle Airport, forcing the closure of parts of one of Europe’s biggest air cargo hubs. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt called it a “new threat scenario” and described the case as a hybrid attack. Flights were suspended overnight and some aircraft, including DHL planes, were diverted before most operations resumed by morning. One runway remained closed while explosives experts removed the detonator and later destroyed the device. Investigators are also looking into an unidentified object that hit a diverted cargo plane, which landed in Hanover with minor damage.
