Ex-Olympian pleads not guilty in Lincoln Reflecting Pool case
What's next: David Hearn remains free before an Aug. 5 hearing as prosecutors pursue a felony carrying up to 10 years.
Former Olympic canoe racer David Hearn pleaded not guilty on July 9 to a felony charge tied to damage at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington. Prosecutors allege Hearn, 67, ripped recently installed liner material during a June 19 encounter, causing more than $1,000 in damage. Hearn has acknowledged touching a piece of liner that was already coming loose but denies removing anything. The case has drawn outsized attention because the $14.7 million to $16 million renovation was ordered at President Donald Trump's request and soon ran into algae and peeling-liner problems. A D.C. judge left Hearn unsupervised pending trial and set a status hearing for Aug. 5.
