Ex-Goldman lawyer tells House Epstein deceived her for years

What's new: Kathryn Ruemmler said she would have gone to law enforcement if she had seen signs Epstein was abusing women or girls.

Former Goldman Sachs top lawyer Kathryn Ruemmler told the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday that Jeffrey Epstein deceived her and used ties to prominent people to burnish his reputation. In opening remarks, Ruemmler said dealing with Epstein "was a mistake" and that she now believes he used her and other respectable figures to legitimize himself. Ruemmler said she never saw evidence of ongoing criminal conduct and would have contacted law enforcement if she had seen signs he was abusing women or girls. Lawmakers are examining her dealings with Epstein from 2014 to 2019, including gifts, advice on media scrutiny and a phone call after his July 2019 arrest on federal child sex trafficking charges. She stepped down as Goldman's top lawyer weeks ago but remains at the bank in an advisory role.
