Evette, Wilson advance to South Carolina GOP governor runoff

What's next: The June 23 runoff is likely to decide the governorship in a heavily Republican state after no candidate won a majority.

South Carolina Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette and Attorney General Alan Wilson advanced Tuesday to a Republican primary runoff for governor after neither cleared 50% in a five-way race. Evette entered the final stretch with President Donald Trump's endorsement, while Wilson drew on years of statewide name recognition from his time as attorney general. The June 23 runoff will determine who moves closest to succeeding term-limited Gov. Henry McMaster, and the winner is widely viewed as the favorite in November in the solidly Republican state. Other major candidates in the primary included U.S. Reps. Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman and businessman Rom Reddy.
