EU fines Google €890 million under Big Tech rules

The European Commission fined Google a total of 890 million euros on July 23 after finding the company breached the EU's Digital Markets Act in Search and Google Play. Regulators imposed one 460 million euro penalty over Google giving preference to its own services in shopping, hotel, transport and sports search results, and a second 430 million euro penalty over app store rules that blocked developers from steering users to cheaper offers elsewhere. The Commission ordered Google to end the violations within 60 days. Brussels said talks with the company on compliance had made substantial progress, reducing the chance of fresh fines for now, though Google criticized the ruling and said it could challenge the decision in court.
