EU, Canada forge alliance and back €90 billion Ukraine loan
What's new: Carney will join an EU leaders summit in June as both sides tighten work on AI, energy and critical minerals.
The European Union and Canada agreed on a new alliance in Montreal on Oct. 30, tightening ties as both face U.S. tariffs and broader strain in transatlantic relations under President Donald Trump. Canada also agreed to contribute to a €90 billion support loan for Ukraine. After a two-day summit, Prime Minister Mark Carney, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa mapped closer cooperation on critical minerals, artificial intelligence, energy and quantum technology. The plan includes a bigger Canadian role in EU meetings, with Carney set to join an EU leaders summit in June and ministers from both sides due to meet in the spring.
