England’s 4-2 World Cup win over Croatia exposed defensive gaps
What’s new: England’s aggressive, direct buildup left Harry Kane deep and Declan Rice wide, opening central space after turnovers.
England opened their World Cup campaign with a 4-2 win over Croatia, but the performance also revealed vulnerabilities in Thomas Tuchel’s side. The tactical tradeoff came from England’s direct attacking approach: Declan Rice often drifted wide while Harry Kane dropped deep to launch passes into runners including Anthony Gordon, Jude Bellingham and Noni Madueke. When those moves broke down, Kane was left in central defensive areas and England looked exposed. Frequent turnovers added to the problem, especially when Croatia pressed Jordan Pickford and forced longer clearances. Assistant coach Anthony Barry said England mixed up when to play short and long, contributing to a more open, end-to-end match.
