Drone strike sinks cargo ship off Bulgaria; 15 crew rescued

Why it matters: Bulgaria plans to summon Russia's ambassador as NATO and the EU weigh a new Black Sea security flare-up.

A drone attack sank a Ukrainian-owned cargo ship off Bulgaria's Black Sea coast early Tuesday, and a second vessel was also hit in what Bulgarian authorities described as the second such incident in a week. Prime Minister Rumen Radev said the Malta-flagged Chelsea 3 was struck by three drones about 18 nautical miles off the coast around 1:30 a.m. The 15 crew members aboard, seven Ukrainians and eight Azerbaijanis, were rescued, and five needed medical assistance, though none was seriously hurt. Radev said there was no firm proof of who carried out the attack, but argued Russia stood to benefit and said he would summon the Russian ambassador. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned the strikes and called for those responsible to be held accountable.
