Drag race car hits spectators in Kotamobagu, 7 killed
The crash happened after a Honda Jazz went about 100 meters past the finish line, and organizers said they would cover victims' costs.
A drag race championship on Jalan AP Mokoginta, East Kotamobagu District, Kotamobagu City, North Sulawesi, turned deadly on Sunday (9/8) after a Honda Jazz struck spectators along the track. The incident reportedly killed seven people. CNN Indonesia wrote that five people were initially reported dead and 10 others seriously injured and taken to a hospital before the death toll later rose. The crash occurred when the car competing in the free for all class was believed to have gone out of control about 100 meters after the finish line. Committee chairman Lucky Sugeha said the organizers were ready to take responsibility for the victims still being treated and to cover all medical expenses. CNN Indonesia also contacted Alamsyah P Hasibuan, head of public relations for the North Sulawesi Police, for confirmation, but had not received a response when the report was published.
