DPR's Komisi VIII backs proposed LGBTQ bill with criminal penalties
The House has not received MUI's draft, but any future review should also cover prevention, education and social guidance.
Singgih Januratmiko, deputy chairman of DPR RI Komisi VIII, backed the Indonesian Ulema Council's proposal to prepare the academic draft for a bill on LGBTQ, including the idea of criminal sanctions. He said the measure was needed to align with Pancasila values, religious norms and stronger families. Singgih said the DPR has not yet received an official document from MUI. If the draft is submitted and Komisi VIII is assigned to discuss it, the process would be opened to input from religious leaders, academics, legal practitioners and LGBTQ groups. He said the regulation should not only emphasize deterrence, but also prevention, education and social guidance. In the article, MUI referred to Fatwa Number 57 of 2014, while the discussion gained momentum after Peraturan Presiden Number 111 of 2025 listed the spread of LGBTQ culture as a nonmilitary threat.
