DOJ subpoenas Los Angeles election workers in California voting probe

What's next: The subpoenas came after a judge refused to halt 20,000 disputed ballots, and the department has appealed.

The Justice Department issued federal grand jury subpoenas to employees in the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder’s office as it intensifies a criminal probe into alleged noncitizen voting in California ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm election. The subpoenas sought records on how the county detects unlawful voting by noncitizens, prevents such ballots from being counted, and responded to recent DOJ warning letters. Los Angeles County confirmed it received the subpoenas last week. The move follows a ruling by U.S. District Judge David O. Carter rejecting the department’s bid to stop California from processing ballots tied to a list of 20,000 people federal officials labeled likely noncitizens. Carter also warned DOJ lawyers to stop threatening state and county election workers.
