DOJ civil rights chief Harmeet Dhillon resigns after 18 months

Why it matters: Dhillon remade the division around Trump priorities, and her exit is the first senior DOJ departure since Democrats won Congress.

Harmeet Dhillon resigned Thursday as head of the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division after 18 months leading a sharp overhaul of the unit. During her tenure, the division redirected enforcement toward President Donald Trump's agenda, including fights over diversity programs, transgender rights in schools and sports, antisemitism, and alleged anti-Christian bias. NPR reported that roughly 300 career attorneys left during the restructuring. Dhillon is the first senior Justice Department official to leave since Democrats retook the House and Senate in the midterm elections. Attorney General Todd Blanche posted on X that he accepted her resignation and thanked her for her service.
