DOJ charges 28 in California in noncitizen voting sweep

What's next: The cases deepen the Justice Department's fight with California over a 20,000-name voter list ahead of the Nov. 3 midterms.

Federal authorities charged 28 foreign nationals in California with unlawful voting and related election crimes in a statewide sweep tied to the Trump administration's push against noncitizen voting before next month's midterm elections. The Justice Department said those charged included lawful permanent residents who are not U.S. citizens and accused them of offenses such as voting as noncitizens, falsely claiming U.S. citizenship to register or vote, and filing fraudulent voter registrations. The action follows the department's lawsuit against California over a list of 20,000 people it identified as likely noncitizens who were sent mail ballots. California officials and Los Angeles County have challenged the federal effort, calling the request legally baseless and raising security concerns about the thumb drive used to deliver the data.
