DNA genealogy identifies 1 more 9/11 victim nearly 25 years later

New York City investigators have identified another victim of the Sept. 11, 2001, attack on the World Trade Center, using forensic investigative genetic genealogy for the first time in the case. The victim, an adult woman whose name is being withheld at her family’s request, is the 1,654th person identified from remains recovered after the attacks. City officials said the technique combined specialized DNA analysis with genealogy research and was used by the Office of Chief Medical Examiner and the NYPD’s Investigative Genetic Genealogy Squad. The identification is the first new one in nearly a year and comes as the city nears the 25th anniversary of the attacks, which killed 2,753 people in New York City.
