DKI deploys 100 workers to clear waste in Muara Angke

Cleanup is targeted for completion by Saturday afternoon, but upstream trash is the main obstacle, officials said.

The DKI Jakarta provincial government deployed 100 field workers, two amphibious excavators and three transport boats to clear piles of trash in the Muara Angke area of North Jakarta. Afan Adriansyah Idris, assistant for development and environment at the DKI Jakarta regional secretary, said the cleanup is targeted to be finished by Saturday afternoon. He said the biggest obstacle is not only the waste that has built up along the coast, but also trash carried downstream from upstream areas. To hold it back, upstream crews have activated barriers and filters so the waste does not keep moving toward the beach. After the cleanup is completed, the DKI Jakarta Environment Agency will conduct monitoring and routine inspections to prevent another buildup.
