UN Security Council adopts Resolution 2823 on peacekeeper attacks

The measure also requires the U.N. secretary-general to report on investigations and prosecutions into killings of peacekeepers.

The U.N. Security Council on Tuesday unanimously adopted Resolution 2823 to strengthen accountability for attacks on U.N. peacekeeping forces. The resolution, drafted by Pakistan and Denmark, was backed by all 15 members of the U.N. Security Council and more than 100 member states. It says attacks on peacekeeping personnel can be classified as war crimes and calls for more consistent investigations and prosecutions. The document also asks the U.N. secretary-general to ensure a prompt factual record after attacks and to submit annual reports on investigations and legal proceedings. According to U.N. data, 1.095 peacekeepers have been killed by deliberate acts since 1948, including 359 since 2013.
