Democrats clinch 54-seat Senate majority after sweeping midterm wins
What's next: Chuck Schumer is set to become majority leader in January as two Senate races in Alaska and Mississippi remain uncalled.
Democrats secured control of the Senate with a 54-seat majority after broad midterm gains in states Donald Trump had previously carried, including Iowa, Ohio, South Carolina and Texas. The wins also included a Kansas seat that NPR reported had not gone to a Democrat in 94 years. Chuck Schumer, now the minority leader, is positioned to become majority leader in January. He cast the result as a long-term shift in the Senate map and said Democrats would focus on lowering the cost of living, ending the Iran war and pursuing White House corruption investigations. Alaska and Mississippi had still not been called Wednesday.
