Deadly fire at Alberta military base leaves casualties, injuries

What's new: Hospitals in Edmonton activated disaster protocols as patients arrived from CFB Wainwright and local facilities were overwhelmed.

A deadly incident at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta triggered a major fire Saturday, killing and injuring military personnel as high winds pushed flames beyond the training area. Defense Minister David McGuinty said the situation remained active and delicate, while the Royal Canadian Mounted Police opened an investigation. Authorities have not released a casualty count. At Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, emergency physician Warren Thirsk said patients were being distributed across city hospitals after care near the base was overwhelmed. The Municipal District of Wainwright later said the fire was being held and that critical infrastructure was protected. CFB Wainwright is one of Canada’s busiest military training bases.
