Dead humpback whale pulled ashore in Denmark for autopsy

A humpback whale known as Timmy was dragged onto a Danish beach after weeks in shallow water, with an autopsy planned to determine how it died.

The carcass of a humpback whale that drew months of attention in Germany was pulled onto a beach on the Danish island of Anholt on Saturday, clearing the way for a post-mortem examination. The whale, known as Timmy or Hope, was found dead on May 14 in shallow water off Anholt in the Kattegat, between Denmark and Sweden. Danish authorities said the examination would help determine the cause of death after a long rescue effort failed to return the animal from the Baltic Sea to the North Sea. The whale had first been spotted off Germany on March 3 and was moved by barge on May 2 in a final attempt to guide it toward Atlantic waters.
