Cyclospora outbreak sickens people in 31 US states as cases climb

What's new: Michigan alone has logged 1,562 infections, while federal officials still have more than 1,500 additional cases under review.

A Cyclospora outbreak has spread across 31 states, with health officials reporting a recent jump in illness compared with a year earlier. The parasite causes cyclosporiasis, a gastrointestinal infection linked to contaminated food and water, and no source has been identified for the current outbreak. The CDC has recorded more than 800 confirmed cases since May 1 and is analyzing more than 1,500 others. Michigan has reported 1,562 cases as of July 10, the highest state total, and spikes have also been reported in New York, Illinois and Ohio. Michigan officials advised people to avoid bagged lettuce and to wash basil, cilantro and raspberries thoroughly. No deaths have been recorded.
