Cyberattack overheated fridges at 400 French supermarkets
What's new: Investigators traced the breach to vulnerable Danfoss refrigeration software, while Ahold Delhaize also took systems offline in the Netherlands and US.
Hackers seized control of refrigeration systems at hundreds of French supermarkets overnight, driving some units to 50 Celsius for hours, spoiling food and sparking small fires. Store counts reported by major chains indicate roughly 400 supermarkets were affected across France, including Intermarche, Netto, Carrefour, Monoprix and Cooperative U. French authorities opened an investigation and directed ANSSI, the national cybersecurity agency, to examine the breach. Danfoss, the Danish supplier linked to the targeted software, said the affected refrigeration units were older models running outdated or unsupported firmware. Separately, Ahold Delhaize reported a security issue that disrupted grocery delivery in the Netherlands and knocked some US retail websites offline.
