Cyberattack at SBI exposed nearly 4,000 customer records in India

Why it matters: The breach at India’s biggest lender adds to rising cyber risks flagged by the central bank for banks and shadow lenders.

State Bank of India, the country’s largest lender by assets, is investigating a suspected cyberattack after nearly 4,000 customer records were exposed on the dark web. In an exchange filing Wednesday, SBI said its initial review of about 375,000 records found 3,897 containing customer information, including names, registered mobile numbers, dates of birth, email and home addresses, branch details and customer identification numbers. The bank said it activated incident-response protocols and brought in an independent cybersecurity agency to examine the source and scope of the leak. SBI said the incident has not materially affected core operations, financial performance or business continuity.
