Cuba’s power grid collapses again, 77% of Havana still dark

Cuba’s national power system collapsed again on Sunday night, triggering widespread outages across the country. Union Electrica de Cuba (UNE) said a total blackout occurred at 22.43 local time. By Monday morning, electricity had been restored to about 23% of Havana, while many other areas remained in the dark. The government usually restores power step by step through small, isolated grids that supply hospitals, water systems and food facilities before reconnecting the national network. UNE also reported that two gas-fired Energas generating units in Boca de Jaruco were being brought back online. This was the sixth nationwide blackout in 2026. Cuba’s electricity crisis has been tied to fuel shortages, aging power plants and U.S. sanctions that Havana says are hindering imports of oil, equipment and financing.
