Côte d’Ivoire’s Elye Wahi cleared to enter Canada during fixing probe
What’s new: The striker was arrested in France on May 29, questioned and released as investigators examine suspicious betting on a yellow card.
Côte d’Ivoire forward Elye Wahi has been cleared to travel to Canada for his team’s World Cup game against Germany, reversing an earlier decision that had blocked his entry. The Ivorian football federation said the required authorization had now been obtained. Wahi, 23, started in Côte d’Ivoire’s 1-0 win over Ecuador in Philadelphia. The case stems from a May 17 Ligue 1 match between Nice and Metz, when betting monitors flagged unusual international wagers on Wahi to receive a yellow card. French league officials passed the information to police, gambling regulators and the French football federation. The Marseille prosecutor’s office said Wahi was arrested on May 29, questioned and released, and that an investigation into alleged fraud, sports corruption, receiving stolen goods and money laundering is continuing.
