Cook seeks delay in Trump probe over Fed governor’s removal

What’s next: A closed White House hearing is set for Nov. 5, but her lawyer said she cannot attend before December because of Fed duties abroad.

Federal Reserve Gov. Lisa Cook is seeking to delay a White House hearing tied to President Donald Trump’s effort to remove her over mortgage fraud allegations. In a letter sent Tuesday, Cook’s lawyer, Abbe Lowell, argued the three-member committee set up by Trump cannot provide a fair process because it includes “demonstrably biased members” and cites unspecified added allegations. Lowell said Cook will be in Europe and Asia on Federal Reserve business and then preparing for the Federal Open Market Committee’s early December meeting, making a Nov. 5 appearance impossible. Trump created the panel last week and ordered it to recommend whether there is cause to remove Cook, an extraordinary test of presidential power over the Fed.
