Colombia panel chair seeks Petro's suspension until June 21

What's next: The move would need backing from the full 16-member commission and then the Senate before it could take effect.

The head of Colombia's Commission of Investigation and Accusation has moved to suspend President Gustavo Petro from office through June 21 as the body examines allegations that he interfered in the presidential campaign of ally Ivan Cepeda. Gloria Arizabaleta's proposal cited conduct she described as serious or extremely serious. The measure has not taken effect, and commission member Miguel Silvera Padilla said Petro remains in office. Any suspension would need approval from all 16 members of the lower-house commission and then from the Senate. Petro's four-year term is due to end in August. Cepeda, the candidate of Petro's Pacto Historico coalition, is set to face lawyer Abelardo De La Espriella in a runoff on June 21.
