Emersonn put Ipswich ahead after Julio Enciso burst through midfield and set him up, before Angulo leveled for Sunderland with a free kick that went in off the crossbar six minutes before halftime. Ipswich pushed for a winner through most of the second half, and Clarke delivered shortly after replacing Enciso in the 71st minute, finishing low into the bottom-right corner. The result marked a winning return to the top flight for Ipswich after the club spent heavily in the summer to avoid an immediate struggle.
