Ciujung River in Serang Turns Black as Banten DLHK Probes Waste

Initial analysis found COD and BOD levels very high, with waste buildup suspected as river flow remains stagnant.

The flow of the Ciujung River in Serang Regency, Banten, has again turned black and given off a strong odor, prompting Banten's Dinas Lingkungan Hidup dan Kehutanan to open an investigation into waste pollution. The team is scheduled to visit the site next week after completing the initial analysis. Banten DLHK is focusing its investigation on three things: water quality, sources of pollution, and water flow and sedimentation. From a review of 2024-2025 samples, the Chemical Oxygen Demand and Biological Oxygen Demand parameters were found to be very high and could exceed quality standards. The team is also mapping the share of household and industrial waste along the riverbanks. In addition, water that tends to remain static is believed to be hindering natural flushing, allowing waste deposits to thicken further.
