China shifts main policy rate, injects 541 billion yuan overnight

Why it matters: Analysts said the move effectively lowers banks’ funding floor by 15 basis points and could pull bond yields lower.

China’s central bank pumped 541 billion yuan into the banking system on Monday as it formally shifted its main policy rate to an overnight lending rate, a step analysts said would ease funding costs and support the economy. The People’s Bank of China conducted overnight reverse repos at 1.25%, replacing the old single fixed-rate focus on seven-day operations with daily overnight operations and multiple rates for seven-day tools. Analysts at CITIC Securities, MUFG China and ANZ said the change effectively trims the lower bound of China’s rate framework by 15 basis points for financial institutions. The move comes as credit concerns around state-backed developer Zhuhai Huafa Group have rattled the bond market and added pressure on policymakers to shore up confidence.
