CDC deputy director Jennifer Shuford to leave after US midterms

Why it matters: Her exit follows a White House push to split some childhood vaccines into five separate doses.

Jennifer Shuford, the deputy director and chief medical officer of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is set to leave the Trump administration after next week’s midterm elections, the Washington Post reported. Shuford, a former Texas health commissioner, joined the CDC in April alongside former deputy surgeon-general Erica Schwartz, healthcare executive Sean Slovenski and Food and Drug Administration official Sara Brenner. The reason for her departure was not clear. The report said one person cited a family health issue, while another pointed to disagreements over vaccine policy. Her planned exit comes after President Donald Trump proposed requiring vaccine makers to split certain childhood shots into five separate doses.
