Caroline Bezengi tanker spill pollutes 12 km of Oman coast
Oman is monitoring fishing grounds and seafood products, while Masirah Island remains at risk of being affected.
An oil spill from the tanker Caroline Bezengi, which ran aground in Omani waters, has polluted about 12 kilometers of coastline in Ras Madrakah, Oman’s Environment Authority said on Saturday (16/8). The latest monitoring showed the oil slick moving southeast toward the open sea, while Masirah Island remains within a potentially affected zone. Earlier, Omani authorities said the spill had already reached beaches in Ras Madrakah and could spread to other areas. Oman’s Food Safety and Quality Center is now monitoring fishing grounds and fish-processing facilities and taking samples to ensure the safety of seafood products. Rescue operations are also continuing to stabilize the ship, transfer the oil cargo safely and contain the source of the leak.
