Canada rejects Trump's order renaming Lake Ontario as 'Lake America'
What's new: Google Maps plans to use the new name for US users, while Canada will keep Lake Ontario.
Canada's government and Ontario's premier pushed back after President Donald Trump signed an order to rename Lake Ontario as "Lake America" following the collapse of US-Canada trade talks. Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canadians would keep using Lake Ontario, while Premier Doug Ford erected a lakeside sign reading "Lake Ontario Now and Always" in English and French. The order directs Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to update the US government's geographic names database. Google said its maps will show Lake America for users in the United States, keep Lake Ontario in Canada, and display both names elsewhere. The lake, one of the five Great Lakes, lies on the US-Canada border, with about 52% of its surface in Canada.
