Canada opens Gordie Howe bridge without US amid tariff clash

What's new: Traffic is due to start Monday, but a dispute over toll revenue and Trump's 50% tariff threat overshadowed the launch.

Canada marked the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge on Friday without U.S. officials, after scrapping a planned cross-border ribbon-cutting as trade tensions deepened between the neighboring countries. The C$4.7 billion span links Windsor, Ontario, with Detroit and is set to open to traffic on Monday. Ontario Premier Doug Ford attended a Canadian-only event, while guests were barred from crossing to the U.S. side. The opening was clouded by disagreements over how bridge revenue will be shared and by President Donald Trump's threat this week to impose 50% tariffs on Canada. Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada would share toll revenue only after being repaid, though a draft agreement released Wednesday described a 15-year split of net bridge and crossing-related revenue.
