BSI prepares Saudi branch for hajj and umrah services

The bank secured initial approval from SAMA in 2024, with 83 percent of Indonesia’s hajj pilgrims recorded as customers.

PT Bank Syariah Indonesia Tbk is advancing operations for its overseas branch office in Saudi Arabia by strengthening services, preparing infrastructure, and meeting local regulatory requirements. Corporate Secretary BSI Wisnu Sunandar said the move is aimed at bringing sharia financial services closer to hajj and umrah pilgrims and Indonesia’s diaspora. BSI obtained initial approval from Saudi Arabian Monetary Authority (SAMA) in 2024 to open a branch in the country. The company said Saudi Arabia is important as the center of the global hajj and umrah ecosystem. Each year, about 203 thousand Indonesian hajj candidates depart, and about 170 thousand, or 83 percent, are BSI customers. In the umrah segment, Siskopatuh 2025 data shows 1.6 million Indonesians performed umrah, with about 84 percent using BSI services.
