Brazil presses Argentina over Flavio Bolsonaro’s flight to Miami
Why it matters: His departure breached a Supreme Court order tied to a money-laundering probe, deepening a diplomatic rift with Javier Milei.
Brazil called in Argentina’s top diplomat in Brasilia to explain Buenos Aires’ role in Flavio Bolsonaro’s trip to the United States after he lost Brazil’s presidential runoff. Argentine authorities said the senator, his wife and two daughters crossed into northern Argentina on Tuesday and then flew to Miami via Ecuador on a chartered plane. Reuters reported Bolsonaro’s exit violated a Supreme Court order requiring him to surrender his passports and stay in Brazil as part of a money-laundering investigation. In a letter, Bolsonaro thanked Argentine President Javier Milei for his assistance, while later saying he fled because of “persecution.” The episode adds to already strained ties between Milei and President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
